Pope Leo resumes working, sees top aide in hospital as doctors say lung recovered from surgery
Doctors said the pope’s postoperative tests remained normal and his chest X-ray showed good recovery after surgery to remove a cancerous nodule.
On Thursday, Pope Leo XIV resumed work at the Agostino Gemelli Polyclinic in Rome, meeting with Vatican chief of staff Archbishop Paolo Rudelli to address administrative duties.
The 71-year-old Leo had the lower right lobe of his lung removed on Tuesday after doctors identified a suspected cancerous nodule, which tests confirmed as adenocarcinoma.
Post-Operative tests remained within normal levels and a chest X-ray showed good recovery of the operated lung, doctors reported; "Overall, his postoperative recovery is proceeding as expected."
For a second day, Leo celebrated Mass with priests in a special chapel near his room on the 10th floor of the hospital, spokesman Matteo Bruni said.
Leo remains hospitalized until at least Oct. 20, and spokesman Bruni has not indicated whether the Pope's planned November pastoral visit to South America requires changes.
Pope Leo XIV met on Thursday with one of his main collaborators and resumed his activities from the hospital, the doctors having indicated that his lung had recovered well from surgery to remove a cancer nodule.
