CP BC Green Leader Emily Lowan Wins Bid for Riding on Vancouver Island
The Canadian Press decision desk projects the Greens will hold the riding as Emily Lowan seeks the party’s first legislative seat under her leadership.
The Canadian Press projects Greens Leader Emily Lowan as the winner in the Vancouver Island riding of Saanich North and the Islands, securing a seat in the legislature.
Long considered a Green stronghold, the riding was previously held by Adam Olsen from 2017 to 2024 and Green Party MLA Rob Botterell, who stepped down when the election was called.
Lowan became leader of the provincial Greens in September 2025, succeeding Sonia Furstenau. At 26, she is a former climate activist who led a successful University of Victoria divestment campaign.
With 50,470 registered voters, 17,021 ballots were cast during advance voting days in the riding spanning North Saanich, Brentwood Bay, Sidney, and the Southern Gulf Islands.
Competition for the seat included NDP candidate Kala Bryson, Centre B.C.'s Richard Smith, and Conservatives candidate Ryan Windsor; polls closed on Saturday, October 24.
