Political Turbulence: Firhad Hakim Resigns as Kolkata Mayor Amid TMC Rebellion
On Wednesday, Kolkata Municipal Corporation Mayor Firhad Hakim resigned from his official position. Party supremo Mamata Banerjee accepted his request, Senior Trinamool Congress leader Kunal Ghosh said.
Citing difficulties in functioning after the Bharatiya Janta Party came to power in West Bengal, Hakim sought what Ghosh revealed was "a dignified exit," deeming the Corporation "defunct" due to state interventions.
Earlier on Tuesday, TMC leader Tarak Singh resigned as the mayor-in-council, claiming an inability to manage waterlogging in heavy rain. His departure follows a series of councillor resignations amid the TMC's loss of state power.
Expelled leader Ritabrata Banerjee announced their status as principal opposition in the West Bengal Legislative Assembly with 58 MLAs, marking a strategic development in the TMC's internal upheaval.
The KMC faces leadership uncertainty after the Bharatiya Janta Party remained ahead in at least 102 of the 144 wards in the 2026 State Assembly elections, fueling speculation about the TMC's future control of the civic body.
