Police swoop on Senzo Mchunu’s KZN home, seize cellphone
Police seized Senzo Mchunu’s phone and other devices in an investigation into defeating the ends of justice and fraud, officials said.
- On Monday, September 21, 2026, SAPS officers from the Provincial Serious and Violent Crimes Unit executed a search-and-seizure warrant at the KwaZulu-Natal residence of suspended Police Minister Senzo Mchunu, seizing electronic devices.
- Mchunu has been on special leave following accusations from Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, who claimed he obstructed criminal investigations and ordered the disbandment of the Political Killings Task Team.
- The investigation into fraud and defeating the ends of justice was opened in 2025 at Durban Central Police Station. Mchunu previously surrendered electronic devices to investigators in November 2025.
- Complying with the Johannesburg High Court order, Mchunu surrendered his phone during the operation. Colonel Robert Netshiunda characterized the search as a standard investigative process.
- Spokesperson Sthembiso Mshengu, appointed to address Madlanga Commission queries, confirmed Mchunu's cooperation as the probe examines alleged corruption and interference within the South Africa justice system.
