Innocent Woman Killed by Gunmen Who Fired 70 to 80 Shots at Wrong Target, Police Say
Police said 70 to 80 shots were fired into Patricia Shepard’s car as detectives pursue two to three suspects and a possible motive.
On Thursday at 1:15 a.m., 50-year-old Patricia Shepard was fatally shot at a Chevron station on U.S. Highway 190 West in Hammond, Louisiana, as gunmen fired 70 to 80 rounds into her vehicle.
Hammond Police Chief Edwin Bergeron Jr. stated investigators believe the gunmen were stalking a target who had already exited the vehicle, mistakenly opening fire on Shepard, whom he called an "absolute innocent victim."
Investigators are searching for two to three suspects who fled in a white sedan stolen during a carjacking in McComb, Mississippi, on Tuesday, armed with what appeared to be AR-style pistols.
Hammond Police Detective Dustin Williams is leading the investigation and urges anyone with information to contact the department or Crime Stoppers of Tangipahoa; authorities have not announced any arrests.
Security footage captured the suspects speeding toward Interstate 55 after the shooting, a development that has rattled local residents like Terrence Selders, who said the violence makes the area difficult to frequent at night.
