Police review shark attack victims' GoPro footage

Police and shark experts review GoPro footage to identify the shark species after a fatal attack that killed a 25-year-old woman and seriously injured her partner.

  • On Thursday morning at Kylies Beach, a 25-year-old woman was fatally mauled and her partner, a 26-year-old man, was seriously injured and taken by Westpac rescue helicopter to John Hunter Hospital.
  • After checking in on Wednesday, the Swiss tourists filmed dolphins at dawn near Kylies Beach, a secluded unpatrolled strip that remained closed on Friday.
  • A beachgoer called triple-0 and, following call handlers and NSW Ambulance paramedics, fashioned a makeshift tourniquet that is thought to have stemmed heavy bleeding and probably saved the man’s life.
  • These shark bite kits, already on more than 150 beaches across NSW, Queensland, South Australia and Western Australia, are being promoted by Australian surfer Danny Schouten's GoFundMe campaign.
  • With searches under way, local beaches remain closed while drones and drumlines conduct searches, and NSW Police prepare a coroner’s report with the couple yet to be identified.
