Ghana police rescue 57 Nigerians in crackdown on human trafficking and cybercrime
The suspects promised jobs to lure victims aged 18-26 into scams; the ring targeted over 1,400 victims who lost nearly $2.8 million, Interpol reported.
- On Wednesday, police in Ghana raided a building in a suburb of Accra, rescuing 57 Nigerians and arresting five suspects, the Criminal Investigations Department said.
- Suspects lured victims aged between 18 and 26 with promises of lucrative jobs in Ghana, then coerced them into online romance scams despite repeated police crackdowns.
- Police found operators used fake identities, charged fake shipment fees and secretly recorded explicit videos for blackmail, recovering 77 laptops, 38 mobile phones, two vehicles, three television sets, and other internet-enabled devices.
- All rescued victims are receiving necessary care, and Interpol said Ghanaian authorities arrested 68 suspects while Ghana's Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection recorded 79 prosecutions and 54 convictions this year.
- Last month Interpol said it coordinated a crackdown across 14 African countries that led to 260 arrests, targeting more than 1,400 victims who lost nearly $2.8 million.
