Police release video of person on e-scooter running red light before being hit by a car in Iowa

Police said a 32-year-old rider broke several bones after running red lights and illegally riding an e-scooter in the street.

  • On Sunday, the Clive Police Department released video showing a 32-year-old man illegally operating an e-scooter and running a red light at the intersection of 86th Street and Harbach Boulevard.
  • Moments after the initial traffic violation, the rider was struck by a vehicle and suffered several broken bones, police said. The man was illegally operating the e-scooter in the street.
  • "It's a 32-year-old person that you would think would know better, out violating traffic laws that he is required to follow, and just wasn't doing that, was riding recklessly," Clive Police Chief Mark Rehberg said.
  • "What that video doesn't show is the next intersection up at Alice, where he was actually struck by a car because he was running a red light there as well," Rehberg said.
  • Clive police have responded to 5 crashes involving e-bikes or e-scooters within the last 12 days, signaling a growing safety concern on city streets.
