- The investigation began last September after interception of four postal shipments containing almost 7 kilograms at Alicante-Elche Miguel Hernández Airport, with packages sent from different addresses in Los Alcázares, Murcia.
- Authorities seized 527 kilograms of Papaver somniferum, a plant linked to opium and its derivatives, investigators said.
- Judicial authorities in Elche ordered the imprisonment of the three detainees, who were brought before the investigating court of the judicial district of Elche.
- Amid legal cultivation for pharmaceuticals, said Guardia Civil spokesman Álvaro Gallardo, many illegally extract opium, which is dangerous as a narcotic substance.
