PM Wong, Prabowo committed to ‘do what is necessary’ to tackle bilateral issues, including haze: Vivian Balakrishnan
The two governments will share evidence on companies linked to forest fires and open a ministerial hotline to manage bilateral disputes.
On Oct 28, Singapore Foreign Minister Vivian Balakrishnan met Indonesia President Prabowo Subianto to manage bilateral strain over energy supplies and haze cooperation, following high-level communication between Prime Minister Lawrence Wong and Prabowo.
Indonesia began reducing natural gas exports to Singapore on Oct 24, cutting supplies by about 8 per cent to prioritize domestic electricity needs in Batam, Bintan, and Sumatra.
The reduction amounted to less than 2 per cent of Singapore's daily gas demand. Balakrishnan and Indonesian Foreign Minister Arrmanatha Nasir agreed on Oct 27 to form a joint task force to identify companies responsible for forest fires causing transboundary haze.
Balakrishnan reaffirmed that Singaporean and Indonesian ministers share a common commitment to the "sanctity of contract," addressing concerns over the gas export cuts with Mineral Resources Minister Bahlil Lahadalia previously stating reductions remained within contractual limits.
In 2027, Singapore and Indonesia will mark 60 years of diplomatic relations as Singapore prepares to chair Asean, with both nations exploring regional energy integration through the Asean Power Grid to strengthen security against future supply disruptions.
The Singaporean Foreign Minister's desire to meet President Prabowo comes amidst the ongoing spotlight on bilateral relations between Indonesia and Singapore.
