PM Shehbaz urges restraint, reaffirms Pakistan's peace role in call with Iran's president
Pakistan said it supports dialogue and offered to help restore regional stability after Iran and the United States traded strikes.
On Friday, Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif urged restraint during telephone conversations with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and Qatari Emir Sheikh Tamim to restore regional stability amid escalating tensions between Washington and Tehran.
President Donald Trump declared the interim ceasefire "over" on Wednesday at the Nato summit, as Washington and Tehran traded strikes for a second consecutive day following the collapse of diplomatic talks in Qatar.
Iran struck at least three ships in the Strait of Hormuz, prompting US strikes aimed at "their ability to threaten the freedom of navigation." Iran subsequently targeted military sites in Bahrain and Kuwait, reportedly downing a US MQ-9 drone.
Pakistan and Qatar, the two principal facilitators, remain in close contact with Tehran and Washington to salvage the fragile peace process and resume negotiations on maritime security and sanctions relief.
