PM explains what triggered 'the most extensive use of the emergency alert system'
Millions received the UK’s most extensive mobile alert as firefighters battled multiple blazes and officials urged people to avoid anything that could spark new fires.
On Friday evening, the Government sent an emergency alert to millions of mobile devices across England and Wales, marking "the most extensive use" of the UK's emergency alert system in response to wildfire risk.
Extreme heat and dry conditions have left Britain described as "a tinderbox," with officials reporting "37 fires smouldering around the country"; Prime Minister Andy Burnham visited Stourbridge, where a wildfire destroyed 19 homes.
Authorities banned disposable BBQs "until further notice" to prevent accidental ignitions, while residents face warnings not to light fires in open countryside and to "take all litter home, especially glass bottles which can focus sunlight."
The alert interrupted The One Show's 20th anniversary special on Friday, drowning out presenters Alex Jones and Roman Kemp during opening segments of the extended broadcast.
Communities Secretary Angela Rayner will convene a summit with fire chiefs to improve future responses, as the Prime Minister considers commissioning firefighting planes; experts warned the UK could face a wet autumn, noting "so, after fire could come floods.
