California lawsuit says makers of plastic bags lied about products being recyclable
California Attorney General Rob Bonta targets manufacturers for misleading recyclability claims as only 2 of 69 state recycling facilities accept these plastic bags.
- On Friday, California Attorney General Rob Bonta sued Novolex Holdings LLC, Inteplast Group Corp., and Mettler Packaging LLC for selling plastic bags labeled recyclable without evidence of recycling.
- A years-long state investigation found fossil fuel and petrochemical industries produced billions of nonrecyclable bags, and in 2022 Bonta sent letters to six companies demanding proof of recyclability.
- Only two of 69 recycling facilities surveyed said they accepted the bags, which display the chasing-arrows recycling symbol but are made from HDPE and generally not recycled, the attorney general's office reported.
- At a news conference Friday, Bonta said the state reached settlements with Revolution Sustainable Solutions, Metro Poly, PreZero US Packaging and Advance Polybag, who agreed to halt sales and pay more than $1.7 million, including $1.1 million in civil penalties.
- Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom last year signed a law banning grocery-store plastic bags starting next year, amid broader policy shifts addressing the plastic waste crisis.
