Plans for large Revelstoke heli-ski lodge rejected following public opposition
The unanimous vote ends Selkirk Tangiers Heli Skiing’s nearly three-year push for a large resort that drew more than 40 written objections.
- On Thursday, August 20, the Columbia Shuswap Regional District unanimously denied third reading for the Mars Creek Wilderness Lodge, ending Selkirk Tangiers Heli Skiing's nearly three-year push to develop the 65-hectare site.
- STHS originally sought to transform the residential parcel into a resort featuring 100 guest units, 50 staff units, 12 camping spaces, and a 10-berth marina to provide easier access to 200,000 ha of backcountry tenure.
- Heavy public opposition fueled the rejection, with more than 40 written submissions and dozens of residents at the June hearing citing concerns about helicopter noise, wildlife impacts, and the lack of a defined power source.
- Area B director David Brooks-Hill stated he "can't support changing the OCP so drastically," while Area C director Marty Gibbons agreed, arguing the board must prioritize public interest over provincial bureaucrat control.
- Relying on diesel generators "bothers" locals, as the project would fundamentally alter an area used for camping, contradicting STHS's previous off-grid intentions stated last year.
