Plaid Cymru biggest party in Senedd, ending 100 years of Labour control
Plaid Cymru won 43 seats, and Rhun ap Iorwerth said he will seek support to form the next government.
On Friday, May 8, Plaid Cymru leader Rhun ap Iorwerth secured a historic Senedd Election victory, with his party winning 43 seats to Reform UK's 34, positioning him as the first nationalist politician set to lead Wales.
Welsh Labour finished third with nine seats, prompting First Minister Eluned Morgan to resign as party leader, though she retains her official title until the Senedd votes on a successor.
To form a government, ap Iorwerth confirmed he will "reach out to others," as a formal coalition requires support from Labour or the Conservatives since Green Party and Lib Dem members are insufficient.
Pledging to "repay that trust," ap Iorwerth vowed to prioritize "cutting waiting lists and building a sustainable health service" while helping families with the cost of living.
Describing the victory as "a moment one hundred years in the making," ap Iorwerth stated that "a new dawn beckons" for Wales as he prepares to be nominated as the next First Minister.
