Pittsburgh nurses lead charge for paid leave, for everyone
Union nurses seek 1:1 maternity staffing ratios and a paid leave program as they negotiate their first contract with UPMC Magee-Womens Hospital.
On Sunday, SEIU Healthcare Pennsylvania members held a press conference advocating for improved paid leave and nursing staffing, with Ruccio emphasizing that current conditions drive sobering statistics regarding maternal and infant health.
UPMC Magee-Womens Hospital is Pennsylvania's largest healthcare network; while the system pocketed more than $643 million in excess revenue in 2025, the state faces 20,000 unfilled nursing positions.
Neonatal nurse practitioner Michelle Hart, a 30-year veteran, noted that a "severe decline" in maternal healthcare forced her involvement as the union negotiates its first contract with UPMC Magee-Womens Hospital.
In March, the state House of Representatives voted 107-92 to approve legislation providing 12 weeks of partial wages for workers, though 92 Republicans objected to the proposal's anticipated $4.5 billion cost.
Allegheny County senator Devlin Robinson has introduced a separate bill co-sponsored by 60% of the Republican-majority Senate, though one source predicted the proposal would "go nowhere" without better inter-chamber discussions.
