Gov. Pillen Signs Order to Protect Nebraska’s Public Power From Data Center Drain
Pillen says the move will protect Nebraska resources as data centers expand and demand more power.
- On Monday, Nebraska Gov. Jim Pillen signed an executive order ending tax subsidies for large-scale data centers under the ImagiNE Nebraska Act.
- Between January 2021 and June 2026, Nebraska issued approximately $317 million in tax credits, direct refunds, and sales tax exemptions to data centers, plus $15 billion in personal property exemptions.
- Twelve counties have imposed temporary moratoriums on new data center construction due to concerns about water and electricity. Cass County resident Jayden Speed said, "It's really important to me that we protect our natural resources."
- State Sen. George Dungan criticized the move, arguing Pillen is "circumventing the legislative process" to capitalize on a "political football," noting the governor previously supported data center expansion.
- The new task force will study industry impacts and provide recommendations to the Legislature, while Pillen said he still wants to attract data centers, explaining, "It's just simply we're not giving the farm away to do it.
