Kering: Balenciaga Announces the Departure of Creative Director Pierpaolo Piccioli
Kering said a successor will be named soon as the house moves on from Piccioli’s craft-focused approach after mixed reception to recent shows.
On Thursday, parent company Kering announced that Pierpaolo Piccioli is stepping down as creative director of Balenciaga, ending his 16-month tenure at the French house.
Piccioli joined Balenciaga in July 2025 following a transformative 25-year tenure at Valentino in Rome, succeeding Demna with a more romantic, craft-minded approach.
His debut couture show in July drew on Balenciaga's archives, though his sophomore collection received mixed reviews; Vogue Runway's Sarah Mower wrote he struggled to balance the brand's competing legacies.
Balenciaga CEO Gianfranco Gianangeli thanked Piccioli for his "dedication, generosity, and collaboration," while Kering CEO Luca de Meo called him "an exceptional couturier and creative talent."
Kering has yet to name a successor for the creative director role, though the company stated the new creative direction of Balenciaga will be announced shortly.
Pierpaolo Piccioli leaves the creative direction of Balenciaga, brand of the Kering group, who will soon announce the new creative direction. The exit takes place one month from Anthony Vaccarello's farewell to Yves Saint Laurent, another brand of the French group. (ANSA)
