WWII Veteran Prepares to Head to France to Be Honored
- K.B. Smith, a 99-year-old World War II veteran, is preparing to travel to France to be honored at the 81st anniversary of D-Day when he will turn 100 years old.
- Smith, who served aboard the USS Satterlee during World War II and witnessed his vessel initiate combat at Normandy, is preparing for a trip and remains the sole surviving member among his 275 crewmates.
- A few months back, Smith’s wife of 74 years passed away, and he attributes his longevity to her support. He also continues the Navy tradition of making his bed each morning.
- Smith admitted that reaching 100 years old was never something he specifically hoped for, and he finds it increasingly difficult to recognize familiar faces during his annual visits to Normandy.
- Smith was honored by his loved ones who came together to recognize his service, emphasizing both the personal importance and historical relevance of his upcoming trip to France.
