Arizona Woman's Tattoo Lands Her in Hospital with Severe Complications
Roberts said the infection spread to cellulitis and sepsis, and doctors said the condition could cause permanent damage.
In Phoenix, Stephanie Roberts developed a severe infection after receiving a tattoo of the Virgin Mary from an artist she found on Instagram, requiring a week of hospitalization and two surgeries.
Despite paying a $200 deposit, Roberts expressed concerns upon arriving at the location, which the artist described as a "studio back here in a shipping container."
Shortly after the session, Roberts suffered from fever, vomiting, and sepsis; Dr. Frank Lovecchio of Valley Wise Health warned that such infections are a "potentially deadly response" capable of causing permanent damage.
While hospitalized, Roberts learned she was pregnant, a discovery she said was overshadowed by her medical emergency; she remains in contact with the artist seeking a $1,200 refund.
An attorney representing the artist, known as RubyGinks, declined to comment on the case, while Roberts plans to continue antibiotics and follow-up medical care in the coming weeks to recover.
