Philadelphia Appoints First Rat Abatement Manager, Launches Response in Northeast
Adrian Jordan will coordinate six city departments and launch a citywide action plan as Philadelphia responds to a growing rodent infestation.
On Wednesday, Philadelphia officials appointed Adrian Jordan, a long-time Health Department employee, as the city's first-ever Rat Abatement Manager to prioritize and address rodent issues across the city.
The appointment follows an October 8 City Council resolution from Councilmember Anthony Phillips urging immediate action against a "growing rodent infestation" in the Lower Northeast, including Oxford Circle, Castor Gardens, and Summerdale.
Jordan will oversee a "One Philly" approach, coordinating resources across six departments including Streets, Sanitation, and the Water Department. A public dashboard tracking complaints will launch shortly.
Residents like Penny Rodriguez and Randy Clark expressed hope the appointment will fix persistent issues, though Councilmember Phillips noted the city must "use every tool in the toolbox" to address rats.
Although the Parker administration reported no "documented rise in confirmed rat complaints," the new position demonstrates ongoing commitment to public health. The city also urges residents to keep trash in metal cans with tight-fitting lids.
