Reality TV show contestant said he drinks raw milk. Research shows that’s risky
Experts say unpasteurized dairy is tied to 4,400 illnesses in U.S. outbreaks and poses higher risks for children and pregnant people.
Netflix's matchmaking series "Love is Blind" introduced account manager John Shannon to public health professional Sarah Williams, sparking debate after Shannon disclosed he consumes unpasteurized milk from a farm.
Public health authorities, including the Food and Drug Administration and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, have for decades warned against consuming unpasteurized dairy, citing serious illness risks like Listeria.
A 2012 CDC study found raw milk caused 85% of hospitalizations in dairy-related outbreaks, while unpasteurized products account for 95% of illnesses from such outbreaks annually.
Following the episode's release, Shannon stated on social media that he no longer consumes raw milk after moving away from the farm that previously supplied his dairy.
Although selling raw milk across state lines remains illegal, states like California, Arizona, and Pennsylvania permit in-state retail, while Massachusetts allows direct sales to consumers.
