Philadelphia police officer dies from injuries in shooting, another officer injured
A 10-year veteran was shot three times while responding to a gun call, and police say a suspect is in custody.
Two Philadelphia police officers were shot early Saturday while responding to a report of an armed man on the 100 block of North 52nd Street in West Philadelphia, with both rushed to Penn Presbyterian Medical Center.
Police were dispatched shortly after 12:20 a.m. for a report of a man with a gun on a porch; officers arrived around 30 minutes later and came under heavy gunfire upon approaching the property.
One officer, a 40-year-old father of two, was shot three times; a 33-year-old father of five was shot 12 times, according to Commissioner Kevin Bethel, who confirmed investigators recovered three firearms including one taken from a wounded officer.
After a neighborhood lockdown, police pulled the suspect from a tree and arrested him, prompting Mayor Cherelle Parker to say, "I see mothers and fathers sons and daughters, brothers and sisters."
While the suspect remains in custody, officials have not released his name or charges; the investigation continues as authorities process evidence and determine the motive for the shooting.
