Petition launched to ban ‘cruel’ dog yoga events
Dogs Trust says the classes can harm puppies and backs a petition that has drawn more than 1,400 signatures.
- Campaigner Nicky Brunt is calling on the government to ban puppy yoga, a move now backed by the Dogs Trust charity. Over 1,400 people have signed her petition, which seeks prohibition similar to a recent ban in Italy.
- Josh Heath, senior public affairs officer at Dogs Trust, said the charity believes these sessions should be banned, citing concerns that puppies are often below eight weeks old. He argues the practice deprives animals of sleep and controlled socialisation.
- Bethan Lee, who runs Pooch Therapy, defended the events, saying they operate within guidelines and benefit socialisation. Lee maintains strict rules, including limiting participants to no more than 20 to ensure animal welfare.
- Welfare expert Dr Samantha Gaines of the RSPCA suggested that commercial businesses conducting these activities should require specific licences. The charity argues anyone currently can set up such events without adequate regulation or oversight.
- To qualify for government discussion, the petition requires 100,000 signatures. Campaigners hope reaching this threshold will force the government to address the lack of specific regulations surrounding puppy yoga events throughout England.
