US war in Iran has cost $29 billion so far, Pentagon says
The updated figure includes equipment repairs and operational costs as lawmakers await a fuller assessment for a future supplemental request.
On Tuesday, a senior Pentagon official stated the Iran War has cost $29 billion, an increase of $4 billion from an estimate provided last month reflecting updated equipment and operational costs.
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and Pentagon Comptroller Jules Hurst III previously cited $25 billion for Operation Epic Fury, a figure Stephen Semler called a "lie" denying the war's spiraling costs.
Brown University's Watson School of International and Public Affairs estimates the economic cost has exceeded $37 billion, including more than $20 billion in higher gasoline prices paid by Americans since the war began.
Economist Justin Wolfers wrote in The New York Times that slower economic growth could mean around $400 billion in lost income, citing rising oil prices and higher interest rates as key factors.
Pentagon Comptroller Jules Hurst III promised the House Armed Services Committee the administration would request supplemental appropriations, stating the request would "come to Congress once we have a full assessment of the cost of the conflict.
