Penn State Student Shot, Killed Outside South Philadelphia Home in Suspected Robbery
Investigators are reviewing porch-camera video that shows Schmidt speaking with two young men before the shooting, and police have not announced any arrests.
On Saturday, June 6, 2026, 22-year-old William Schmidt was fatally shot on the 1900 block of Durfor Street in South Philadelphia around 1:30 a.m. Schmidt was pronounced dead at Penn Presbyterian Medical Center shortly after.
Schmidt, a Penn State University senior, was returning home from a local bar where he had been watching the NBA Finals with friends when he encountered two suspects in what police describe as an apparent robbery.
Surveillance footage captured Schmidt chasing a suspect after a phone was thrown, with video showing Schmidt saying, "Give me back my phone," before the gunman turned and shot him in the chest.
"He was a really good person who cared about everybody," said Bill Schmidt, the victim's father. Neighbors created a memorial at the scene and provided police with additional surveillance footage to aid the investigation.
The Philadelphia Police Department's Homicide Unit has made no arrests and urges anyone with information to contact the unit at 215-686-3334 or submit an anonymous tip by texting 8477.
