- Schmidt, a Penn State University senior, was returning home from a local bar where he had been watching the NBA Finals with friends when he encountered two suspects in what police describe as an apparent robbery.
- Surveillance footage captured Schmidt chasing a suspect after a phone was thrown, with video showing Schmidt saying, "Give me back my phone," before the gunman turned and shot him in the chest.
- "He was a really good person who cared about everybody," said Bill Schmidt, the victim's father. Neighbors created a memorial at the scene and provided police with additional surveillance footage to aid the investigation.
- The Philadelphia Police Department's Homicide Unit has made no arrests and urges anyone with information to contact the unit at 215-686-3334 or submit an anonymous tip by texting 8477.
