Penguins Trade: Acquire lefty defenseman for Caleb Jones, prospect
Kyle Dubas added a left-shot defenseman to strengthen Pittsburgh’s blue line depth, while Buffalo received two defensemen in the swap.
On Monday, the Pittsburgh Penguins traded defensemen Caleb Jones and Daniel Laatsch to the Buffalo Sabres in exchange for Ryan Johnson, a former first-round draft pick.
Penguins General Manager Kyle Dubas executed the trade while attempting to return to the Stanley Cup Playoffs for the second consecutive year after acquiring defenseman Spencer Stastney from the Edmonton Oilers.
Johnson, a 25-year-old defensive-oriented blue liner, was selected 31st overall in the 2019 NHL Draft by Buffalo after playing collegiately at the University of Minnesota and spending most of his recent professional career with the AHL Americans.
The Sabres receive Jones, a veteran of 255 NHL games, alongside prospect Daniel Laatsch, a 24-year-old Wisconsin product who has yet to appear in a regular season NHL contest.
Buffalo looks to integrate both defenders into their system, while Pittsburgh hopes Johnson's skating ability helps maintain momentum during the 2026-27 campaign as both organizations adjust early-season lineups.
