Pendlebury breaks AFL games record in 433rd appearance
Pendlebury became the AFL’s all-time games leader in his 433rd match, and Collingwood marked the milestone with gold numbers on every jumper.
On Saturday, Collingwood veteran Scott Pendlebury broke the AFL all-time games record in his 433rd appearance, with more than 90,000 fans at the MCG witnessing the Magpies defeat West Coast.
Critics accused Collingwood of "hand-picking" West Coast for the milestone match after managing Pendlebury out of two recent games; an Achilles injury had derailed his original plan to break the record against Geelong.
Every Collingwood player wore gold numbers on their jumpers to honor Pendlebury, with Magpies coach Craig McRae admitting the team kept the plan secret until moments before the first ball-up.
West Coast coach Andrew McQualter praised the "awesome opportunity" for his players before the massive crowd, while young gun Harley Reid celebrated his 50th game with 20 disposals and four clearances.
Pendlebury remains focused on winning another premiership this year rather than dwelling on his final tally, planning to recover before facing the Bulldogs next week.
