Penang doctor dies after being buried alive in landslide; wife heard crying at scene
Two family members escaped after a landslide buried and killed a 73-year-old doctor, while firefighters recovered his body more than two hours later.
- On Sunday, Oct 25, a landslide struck a home in Taman Seri Rambai, Paya Terubong, Malaysia, killing Wong Kar Lin, 73. A collapsed wall buried the doctor during the morning incident in Penang.
- Sahabat Alam Malaysia President Meenakshi Raman questioned whether sufficient safety measures existed at the site, citing repeated warnings from residents and environmental groups about hill-cutting dangers in the area.
- Chang Mei Nuo and her 35-year-old son managed to escape while preparing breakfast, according to the Penang Fire and Rescue Department. Wong's mother-in-law, Wong Poh Lim, fled to safety before discovering him trapped beneath rubble.
- Firefighters recovered Wong's body at 11.30am, more than two hours after the collapse. A neighbour identified as Lim reported hearing a 'thunderous crash' and discovering the landslide had destroyed the back of the neighbouring house.
- Raman stated the incident serves as a reminder of dangers from extensive hill-cutting, asserting, 'Unfortunately, we have been proven right once again,' regarding prior warnings by residents and non-governmental organizations.
