PBSO deputy shoots machete-wielding man during domestic disturbance in Palm Beach County
Deputies fired after the man ignored commands to drop a 1.5-foot machete and advanced aggressively; the suspect is in critical condition, officials said.
- On Nov. 18, a Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office deputy shot 19-year-old Andre Mayard inside Palm Lake Estates after PBSO said he advanced at deputies with a machete.
- Deputies responding to a domestic call were gathering information from a woman at the home's carport when a man exited and retrieved a machete from nearby bushes, PBSO said.
- Chief Deputy Robert Allen, PBSO, said the machete was about 18 inches, `He knew where to go to retrieve it`, and investigators believe only one deputy fired.
- Riviera Beach Fire Rescue transported the man to a local hospital where he remains in critical condition as of Nov. 19, and the involved deputy has been placed on administrative leave while FDLE and the Palm Beach County State Attorney's Office investigate.
- Neighbors told reporters about prior concerning behavior, and court eviction records show multiple filings in 2022, 2024, and earlier in 2025.
