Cameroon's President Biya, 92, Announces Bid for Eighth Term in Office
CAMEROON, JUL 13 – At 92, Paul Biya aims to extend his 43-year rule despite criticism over his health, governance, and opposition candidates challenging his bid for another seven-year term.
- On Sunday, President Paul Biya declared his candidacy for an eighth term, with the election set for 12 October and candidates required to register by 21 July.
- First assuming office in 1982, Biya abolished term limits in 2008 and supporters have urged another run since last year.
- Opposition figures including Maurice Kamto, Joshua Osih, Akere Muna and Cabral Libii have filed to run, and his 2018 re-election was marred by fraud allegations, low turnout and violence amid a rift with former allies.
- After the announcement, Paul Biya posted, `I am a candidate in the presidential election. Rest assured that my determination to serve you matches the urgency of the challenges we face,` and Grégoire Owona said the party had no doubts while speculation ban revived debate over his fitness for office.
- Winning another term would keep him in office until nearly 100 years old, raising concerns as opponents say his long rule has stifled economic and democratic development and he has never lost since 1982.

We are often stunned by leaders who have scruples to use arguments of bad faith, to utter false theories in order to win the support of those who follow them to the limit. Saying the truth dear gentlemen, requires an extra effort of brevity. Proposing a lie and distilling false promises for decades is more disqualifying and defiling. You have to be foolish to follow their litany in favor of their mentor. Everyone knows this phenomenon which puts…
