Paul Bettany Addresses Controversial Johnny Depp Texts About Amber Heard in Friendship Update
Bettany says he had not spoken to Depp in years and called the public release of their texts a very interesting time.
On Thursday, Marvel Cinematic Universe star Paul Bettany addressed controversial text messages exchanged with Johnny Depp, telling The Times he had not spoken to the Pirates of the Caribbean actor in years when the exchanges surfaced during a 2020 libel case.
The texts were made public during Depp's 2020 libel trial against The Sun, which labeled him a "wife beater." In the 2013 exchange, Depp wrote about burning and drowning his ex-wife, Amber Heard, while Bettany responded.
"I was being painted as this close friend of a guy I hadn't spoken to in years," Bettany told the publication. He added, "I've been married 23 years and, for what I do, I live an incredibly quiet life."
Bettany chose to remain silent during the trial, explaining that "everybody kind of thought this is probably a nothing burger." He continues to focus on his work, recently premiering the WandaVision trilogy finale, VisionQuest.
The actor maintains he has had no relationship with Depp since the texts surfaced, continuing his professional path following the VisionQuest premiere. His career has remained relatively controversy-light throughout the incident.
