The CEO of the Alamo’s historic site has resigned after a top Texas Republican criticized her
Gov. Dan Patrick cites Kate Rogers’ past writings and a recent Indigenous Peoples social media post as reasons for her resignation demand, reflecting ongoing historical narrative conflicts.
- In a letter on Oct. 23, Governor of Texas Dan Patrick called for Kate Rogers to resign, stating `I do not believe you were aware of her writings or her views towards state oversight when you hired her, but I do believe these newly discovered writings undermine the credibility of the Alamo Trust.`
- Earlier this month, a viral post prompted scrutiny of the Alamo Trust after a since-deleted Indigenous Peoples tribute went viral and Texas Scorecard flagged excerpts of Kate Rogers' 2023 dissertation, which Patrick called "newly discovered" on Thursday.
- Rogers' dissertation stated `Philosophically, I do not believe it is the role of politicians to determine what professional educators can or should teach in the classroom` and warned the 2023 conservative agenda could have negative consequences for the Alamo.
- Patrick urged a preemptive resignation, saying he "suggested she offer her resignation before the board considers the matter," while Land Commissioner Dawn Buckingham criticized the post and Rogers and the Alamo Trust offered limited comment.
- This dispute marks the latest flashpoint in a long-running debate as 2015 guiding principles call for telling the Alamo's entire history and the redevelopment project includes galleries covering Indigenous context through the Battle, with Kate Rogers leading Alamo Trust Inc. since 2021.
