The Roman patriarch expressed the condolences of the family of former President Ion Iliescu, pointing out that it "has always had an attitude towards the Roman Orthodox Church, even before being President of Rome, since it recognized the importance of the Roman Orthodox Church in history and in the lives of the Roman people".
The death of former President of Romania, Ion Iliescu, has eliminated a wave of reactions to political leaders, but also to public opinion. From solemn ombudsmen, on heard messages, the public speech reflects the complexity of its political heritage.
Ion Iliescu was the president of all Romanians in times of restrictions, the first democratic president in the history of Romania, said in March the President of the Romanian Academy, historian Ioan-Aurel Pop.
For the patriarch of the Roman Orthodox Church, IPS Daniel, Ion Iliescu was "the president who changed the political orientation of Romania". His merit, in the opinion of the head of BOR, was the introduction of religion into schools.
