‘I Just Saw the smoke:’ Passengers Injured on Flight From Atlanta to Dallas From Laptop Fire
On Friday, a laptop caught fire aboard American Airlines flight 2398 from Atlanta to Dallas, carrying about 133 passengers approximately 30 minutes before landing.
In-Flight fires linked to lithium-ion batteries often result from a phenomenon called "thermal runaway," which occurs when batteries are damaged, defective, or overheated, per Simple Flying.
After the owner tossed the burning laptop into the aisle, flight attendants contained it using a "thermal containment bag," though the pilot confirmed "four to five passengers" suffered burns.
Firefighters boarded the Airbus A321 at the gate after the aircraft landed at Dallas-Fort Worth without further incident, according to footage published by ABC News.
Safety regulations require large lithium-ion batteries remain in carry-on luggage so crews can quickly extinguish fires, as the FAA has logged 58 such battery-related incidents so far this year.
