Evacuations in Liverpool city centre after car crash causes gas leak
Emergency crews capped the leak after the crash closed streets and forced evacuations, while police said the driver is helping enquiries.
On Saturday, a Peugeot car crashed into the Tiger Rock Restaurant on North John Street in Liverpool, rupturing a gas line and forcing extensive evacuations across the city centre.
Emergency responders from Merseyside Police and Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service established extensive cordons, evacuating nearby buildings and diverting Wirral Metro bus services to manage the hazard.
The North West Ambulance Service assessed three people for minor injuries at the scene; the driver remained to assist police with enquiries, with no indication the crash was deliberate.
Cadent gas engineers capped the leak, and a structural engineer confirmed the building's integrity "has not been compromised," allowing authorities to begin reducing cordons on surrounding streets.
Merseyside Police continue managing restricted access on North John Street between Victoria and Harrington Street; witnesses are asked to contact police by calling 101 with reference 392.
