Low municipal election voter turnout not a concern for these Quebec towns
Competitive races and mobile voting drove turnout above 70% in many small Quebec towns, well above the provincial average of 41.3%, officials said.
- Municipal elections in Quebec showed more than two dozen small Quebec towns with turnout over 70 per cent, while Montreal recorded 37 per cent and only Quebec City surpassed 50 per cent, Elections Canada data shows.
- Representatives from high-voting municipalities say close-knit communities, candidate effort and competitive races drove turnout, while Pénélope Larose called these the "biggest elections in 20 years" after 2021 acclamations.
- Desbiens, Saguenay-Lac-St-Jean town, recorded 72.38 per cent turnout with canvassing, phone calls and mobile voting credited, while Lac-Édouard, Mauricie region, saw just over 80 per cent and about a half a dozen towns surpassed 80 per cent.
- More than 4,500 candidates were elected via acclamation, including 564 mayors, while Quebec's Municipal Affairs Department reported turnout rose to 41.3 per cent from 38.7 per cent in 2021.
- Amid centennial plans next year, Larry Bernier, outgoing Lac-Édouard mayor, said he'd been elected by acclamation for five terms and linked turnout to the town's small size, adding `I thought I could maybe make some room for others.
