Parks Canada rolls out Rogers Pass winter permits in final season of current avalanche agreement
The agency is adding an online quiz, later morning updates and a youth exemption as military-backed avalanche control nears its end.
Parks Canada's winter permit system returns for the 2026-27 ski touring season, with the online quiz available since October 15 and the system taking effect November 15.
Summit Station will provide essential visitor services this winter while the Rogers Pass Centre undergoes roof repairs into 2027. Parks Canada will post daily restricted area statuses at 7:30 a.m. Pacific Time.
Backcountry users younger than 19 do not require a separate permit if accompanied by a parent or guardian, though Parks Canada strongly encourages minors to apply for their own permits for educational purposes.
This appears to be the final season under the longstanding Operation PALACI agreement, as the Canadian Armed Forces indicated it will not renew the memorandum "in its current form" after August 17, 2027.
The winter permit system manages access through Glacier National Park's avalanche cycle to maintain safety for the Trans-Canada Highway, allowing recreationists to access mountain slopes without interfering with planned avalanche control operations.
