Parents Warned They Could Lose £2k if They Miss Key HMRC Deadline
Around 543,000 parents could lose up to £2,000 per child each year if they miss reconfirmation, HM Revenue & Customs said.
Around 543,000 parents using Tax-Free Childcare risk losing up to £2,000 per child each year if they fail to reconfirm their details on time, according to HMRC.
The scheme requires parents to reconfirm details every three months, but each household has a different deadline based on signup date, leaving many parents unaware of when their window closes.
If the deadline passes, accounts switch to "pay only" status and stop receiving the government top-up immediately. Under the scheme, the government adds £2 for every £8 parents pay in, up to £4,000 for disabled children.
Experts warn that missing even one reconfirmation can trigger months of financial strain, especially as data from the Office for National Statistics shows many households already struggle to cover unexpected costs.
Checking account status now can ensure families retain crucial support, and Revenue and Customs officials urge parents to log in immediately to verify personal deadlines before they pass.
