Parents Urged to Vaccinate Children Against Flu ‘Wildfire’ as Cases Rise
- During the coming weeks, NHS England is setting up pop-up clinics at fire stations, bowling alleys, football pitches and libraries to vaccinate children during half-term.
- Duncan Burton, Chief Nursing Officer for England, warned the flu has arrived early this year with a worrying increase among children, and health officials said it can spread "like wildfire" across schools.
- NHS England said over 10 million jabs have been administered, including nearly 1.5 million pupils and more than 300,000 toddlers, with six fire station clinics across Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent during the coming weeks and one in Longton on Saturday.
- Health advisers note the jab takes only five minutes and eases pressure on the NHS during winter; vaccines cover people aged 65 and over, under-65s in vulnerable groups, care-home residents and carers, pregnant women, close contacts, frontline staff, and children.
- To boost uptake, NHS England is making vaccines easier to access close to home or at school, urging parents to check options and opt in over half-term since the virus changes annually.
