Parents of 1-year-old fatally shot by police protest at Mississippi Attorney General’s Office
Parents and activists say the state’s justification ignores months of grief and demand accountability after the 1-year-old’s death in a police shooting.
On Monday, parents and activists protested at Mississippi Attorney General Lynn Fitch's office in Jackson, demanding accountability for the fatal police shooting of 1-year-old Kohen Wiley.
Senatobia Sgt. Hunter Foster killed the toddler in June during a shoplifting call 65 kilometers south of Memphis, Tennessee; the Attorney General's office ruled last month the shooting was justified.
Cries of "our baby's life mattered" echoed through the lobby as demonstrators demanded answers, while Foster's attorney, Martin Zummach, claimed his client had "no choice" but to fire into the vehicle.
Fitch's chief of staff told protesters the Attorney General was unavailable. Separately, the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives is investigating a Saturday arson fire that damaged the Senatobia police building.
Davion Williams, Kohen's father, demanded Foster's prosecution and Fitch's removal from office. He wore a shirt reading "Kohen should be 2" to mark the toddler's second birthday, which would have occurred on Sunday.
