Parents in UK have got '8 days' to apply for £2,500 fund
- The Government is urging parents to apply by January 1 to access funded childcare, with a December 31 deadline for parents whose children turned nine months old between September and year-end.
- Since September 1, eligible working parents have accessed 30 hours a week of funded childcare, backed by a record £9.5 billion investment; the DfE said this could save parents up to £7,500 annually per child.
- Ipsos polling found uneven awareness of the September expansion, with London lowest at 57%, parents from less deprived backgrounds at 78%, and 65% in the most deprived, while around two in five parents from ethnic minority backgrounds were unaware.
- The Department for Education estimated more than half a million parents may have saved 2,500 pounds per child by Christmas, with some families reporting over 700 pounds monthly savings, said Alice Barrett.
- Childcare groups warned disadvantaged children are at risk of missing out if parents don't qualify, while the expansion includes early help and dedicated SEND support amid the Government's concern about low take-up.
