Parents cheer, businesses brace as Western Canada ditches the time change
Technology experts warned of scheduling problems as Canadians reported phones showing the wrong time after Western provinces and territories skipped the fall clock change.
On Sunday, British Columbia, Alberta, Manitoba, northwestern Ontario, and the Northwest Territories shifted to year-round daylight time, ending the traditional fall-back clock adjustment that Saskatchewan abandoned years ago.
Residents across the Prairies offered mixed reactions to the change. Siva Sivabalan, a resident, welcomed more evening daylight, while parents in Edmonton appreciated avoiding sleep schedule adjustments.
Technology glitches caused some cellphones to display incorrect times Sunday. Calgary hairstylist Jordan Janovcik expressed anxiety about scheduling confusion, stating, 'I think this is going to be really hard for a lot of businesses.'
Telus and Google responded by providing guidance to users. Service provider Telus advised checking automatic time settings, while tech giant Google said, 'Our teams are working to ensure these updates reach all Canadian users as quickly as possible.'
Commute safety concerns persist due to darker mornings ahead. Edmonton resident Irwin-Greer noted, 'I don't love that it's going to be darker for longer when the kids are going to school,' raising worries about student and worker visibility.
