Police Arrest Couple After Baby Found Dead in Motel
Police say the baby boy was 6 to 7 months old, and Major Crime investigators took over after a welfare check uncovered the death.
Benjamin Nicholas Houghton and Yue Ning Lieu were charged after an infant was found dead at the Tollgate Motel in Glen Osmond on Saturday; the couple faced a brief hospital bedside hearing following the discovery.
South Australia Police conducted a welfare check at the motel on Saturday, discovering the infant who had been deceased for a period of time; a post-mortem confirmed the boy was aged between six and seven months old.
The Major Crime Investigation Branch has assumed control of the investigation due to the case's complexity, and police are seeking information from anyone who stayed at the Tollgate Motel to contact Crime Stoppers.
Houghton and Lieu appeared in Adelaide Magistrates Court on Monday and were remanded in custody until May 3, 2027, after they did not apply for bail on charges of criminal neglect and concealing human remains.
Police Minister Michael Brown said he has "not had the chance to be fully briefed yet," while Police Commissioner Grant Stevens emphasized the sensitive investigation affects responding officers, detectives, and health sector workers.
