Paralyzed A's Minor Leaguer Ryan Lasko Leaves Hospital More than Two Months After Spinal-Cord Injury
The 24-year-old outfielder was paralyzed in a June collision and staff said his progress could lead to a full recovery.
- On Wednesday, Athletics prospect Ryan Lasko was discharged from Kessler Institute for Rehabilitation in West Orange, New Jersey, after spending exactly two months recovering from a paralyzing spinal-cord injury sustained in an outfield collision.
- Lasko suffered the spinal-cord injury on June 30 when he and Double-A Midland teammate Devin Taylor collided in Frisco, Texas, both attempting to make a play on a ball to the gap during a game.
- Describing his recovery progress, Lasko said he has achieved "big wins" like opening a water bottle, having checked many boxes regarding his personal independence and regaining abilities he previously took for granted.
- He will initially return to Jackson, New Jersey, then live near the Kessler facility for approximately two months, supported by his mother, Patti, and girlfriend Alli Graff as he continues recovery.
- Lasko told The Associated Press he is learning to have patience, stating, "Reworking my brain to just wait, there's nothing else I can do now, I have to wait." He cannot predict the next year but is focusing on the present.
