Taiwan shuts Papua New Guinea office and ends LNG buying, citing Chinese pressure
Taiwan said the move follows Chinese pressure and will affect about one-third of Papua New Guinea’s LNG exports, its foreign ministry said.
On Friday, Taiwan shut its representative office in Papua New Guinea and halted LNG purchases from the country, blaming Chinese political pressure for the decision.
Papua New Guinea had repeatedly demanded the Port Moresby office close, culminating in an order issued in July that reflected long-standing diplomatic competition between China and Taiwan in The Pacific.
Taiwan cancelled about 500,000 tonnes of planned spot LNG purchases for early 2026, a volume representing roughly one-third of Papua New Guinea's total LNG exports.
Taiwan's foreign ministry stated the actions "reflect China's continued use of political pressure and economic influence to interfere in other countries' diplomatic decisions and suppress Taiwan's international space."
Neither Papua New Guinea nor Chinese foreign ministries responded to requests for comment, while Taiwan maintains formal diplomatic ties with just 12 countries globally.
