Palestinian President Pledges Elections, Reforms at Fatah Conference
On Thursday, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas was unanimously re-elected as Fatah leader, pledging to press ahead with reforms and hold long-delayed presidential and parliamentary elections.
Fatah kicked off its first leadership conference in 10 years as the movement faces existential challenges following the war in the Gaza Strip.
Approximately 2,580 members are attending the conference across Ramallah, Gaza, Cairo and Beirut, expected to elect 18 representatives to the central committee and 80 to Parliament.
Despite declarations of a "united front," key Palestinian leader Nasser al-Qudwa is boycotting the gathering, calling the conference "illegitimate" and saying the leadership's "time is up."
Abbas faces mounting pressure from the United States, European Union and Arab states to implement reforms, with the central committee poised as critical for the post-Abbas succession era.
The Fatah Congress, the main Palestinian party, opened as the movement faced many challenges after the war in Gaza and the expansion of Israeli settlements.
Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has promised to hold long-awaited presidential and parliamentary elections, but has not given a timeframe. He has also called for continued reforms of the Palestinian Authority.
