The emergency riverbed sill being built to protect Paks Nuclear Power Plant has reportedly caused severe scour in the Danube, deepening the riverbed by 8–13 metres and undermining the structure itself. The problems raise questions over Péter Magyar’s crisis management and a restricted procurement process that awarded the contract to a single bidder at 30 per cent above the estimated price.

It has become questionable whether the Paks weir will be built according to the original plans, as the huge currents of water will put enormous strain on the structure and quickly deepen the riverbed beneath it. But this is not the only problem with the project, as it has already been revealed that the government is building the Paks weir without an environmental permit.
The Danube riverbed deepened significantly in a short time near the structure under construction, which itself was damaged. The original plans may also have been put at risk.
