Pakistani Airspace to Remain Shut for Indian Airlines Until Sep 23

The ban on Indian civilian and military flights over Pakistan's airspace has disrupted operations and caused a financial loss of PKR 4.1 billion in just over two months, officials said.

  • The Pakistan Airports Authority issued a fresh NOTAM on Wednesday extending the ban on Indian aircraft until September 23.
  • Earlier this year, Pakistan first closed its airspace on April 23 after the Pahalgam terror attack that killed 26 people and amid tensions over the Indus Waters Treaty.
  • The closure affected 100 to 150 Indian aircraft daily, reducing transit traffic by almost 20 per cent, while the Pakistan Airports Authority lost PKR 4.1 billion in just over two months, the Pakistan Ministry of Defence reported.
  • India responded on April 30 by closing Pakistani airspace reciprocally, while Pakistan suspended bilateral agreements, halted trade, and ordered Indian defence advisers to leave.
  • Repeated extensions have disrupted hundreds of flights since the July extension until August 24, straining Pakistan's aviation sector as industry reports highlight substantial losses.
