Pakistan assumes G-24 chairmanship, seeks global financial reforms
Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb said the chairmanship will focus on development-led growth, stronger representation and reforms to global lending rules.
On Sunday, November 1, 2026, Pakistan assumed the chairmanship of the Intergovernmental Group of Twenty-Four , with Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb pledging to prioritize development-led growth and reform of the international financial architecture.
Aurangzeb outlined three strategic priorities: development-led growth, stronger representation for developing economies, and reform of international financial architecture, aiming to shift the group from collective voice to meaningful influence.
"Macroeconomic stability must serve as a foundation for investment, productivity, employment and shared prosperity," the minister said, advocating for equitable governance and greater responsiveness from Bretton Woods institutions.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif welcomed the appointment as a diplomatic milestone, expressing confidence that Pakistan will elevate the country's voice in global economic affairs and address climate change challenges.
The chair emphasized that developing economies' immense potential should not be constrained by an international financial architecture that has yet to fully adapt to a changing world, with priorities including affordable development financing and sustainable debt solutions.
